Part 3 of 3: Crafting a Cohesive College Application Story
Missed the earlier posts?
I’ve seen students with a 4.0 GPA and a 1580 SAT get passed over.I’ve also seen students with a 3.7 GPA and a 1300 SAT get into their dream schools.
What made the difference?
Story.

Not stats. Not spin. A deliberate narrative that brings clarity to who the student is, what they value, and where they’re going.
Most applications are academically solid—but narratively scattered. The essay goes in one direction. The activities list goes another. The supplements feel like afterthoughts. It adds up to… not much.
Admissions officers want to understand the human behind the transcript. When that insight is missing, everything else starts to fade.
What’s Really Missing: Cohesion
It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being purposeful.
Colleges aren’t just admitting grades or scores—they’re building a community. They want to know how your student will show up in that space: what they’ll contribute, what drives them, and how they make sense of their own path.
Cohesion isn’t just helpful. It’s essential.
The Application North Star
Every strong application starts with a clear identity—and I help students define theirs through something I call the Application North Star.
It’s one sentence that captures the traits, values, and growth that tie the application together. Think of it as the thesis of the application: everything else supports and expands on it.
Here’s an example:
“I’m a resilient problem-solver who brings curiosity and mentorship to everything from research to robotics.”
Once that’s defined, each part of the application knows its role:
The essay illustrates the origin of that identity
The activities list shows it in action
The supplements connect it to a school’s values
The recommendations echo the core message
That’s how cohesion turns good into memorable.
A Real-Life Example
On June 24, I’m hosting a free webinar to walk families through a real student case study—someone who didn’t have perfect numbers but still got into a highly selective university.
The secret? His entire application told one clear story. Not repetitive. Not rehearsed. Just honest, thoughtful, and aligned.
If you want your student’s application to rise above the noise, this is how.
It’s Go Time
By mid-summer, most families either start building a plan or start falling behind.
Don’t wait until August to figure out your student’s story. Join me live and learn how to craft an application that feels intentional from start to finish.
Free webinar: “Crafting the Story Colleges Can’t Ignore” — June 24You’ll get a framework, a case study, and tools to use right away.
This is the final blog in our storytelling series—and your best chance to get clear before things get chaotic.
Let’s build something worth reading.
